In detail
Lying on rock balconies, houses and terraces look out over the sea … (Lina Orlandi)
Amalfi is one of the best known places in Campania region. An Italian icon. According to legend, Amalfi was a nymph loved by Hercules who the gods decided to bury here.
Today Amalfi offers historical itineraries that start from its Cathedral, the most famous of its religious buildings, of Arab-Sicilian style and touch the Arsenale of the Republic and the remains of churches and ancient convents.
Thanks to its immeasurable natural and historical beauties, the Amalfi Coast has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
Its beaches are a true paradise on earth. They can be reached by boat or along narrow paths overlooking the sea. The coastlines of the Amalfi area are very different from each other and this attracts swimmers and explorers of all ages. Marina Grande is the most popular but the favourite beach for families and children is the one of Atrani with its sandy bottom sloping towards the sea. And then there is Castiglione, the beach located under the splendid Ravello, perched on the side of the mountain, about a hundred meters long and about twenty meters deep.
Furore is the town on the Amalfi Coast that enchants every visitor with its admirable open-air art gallery. Characteristic that it shares with other 85 Italian municipalities together with which it is defined “Painted Town”.
The overhanging rocks, the vegetation clinging to the cracks in the walls, the groups of houses built with tenacity in the ground, the sound of the waves breaking against the ravines of the coast, the deep colour of the sea have made the fjord of Furore a place of great suggestion.
But the charm of Furore is also in the particularity of its village with its houses suspended on the slopes of the rocky ridge. Among its narrow streets and flights of stairs, famous directors such as Federico Fellini and Roberto Rossellini have shot some of their unforgettable movies.
Many courageous tourists and locals delight in the diving competition from Furore Fjord, twenty-eight meters above the sea, while curious passers-by are with their noses up, both from land or sea, to admire these aquatic acrobatics.
